Corruption allegations between top officials lead to brawl in front of Ukrainian president

Spokesman for Ukraine's president has upbraided the country's interior minister and the Odessa governor for a water-throwing and insult-laced clash

Corruption allegations between top Ukrainian government officials boiled over into a dramatic showdown on Monday that reportedly saw the country’s interior minister fling a glass of water at a regional governor – all as president Petro Poroshenko looked on.

The incident, which took place at a session of the National Council of Reforms held at the presidential administration in Kiev, forced Mr Poroshenko to end the meeting, according to lawmakers who were present.

At the heart of the matter were allegations of corruption at the state-owned Odesa Port Plant, a major chemical producer and a top priority for Ukraine’s privatisation plans. Mikheil Saakashvili, former Georgian president and current Odesa regional governor, has claimed prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and his allies are delaying the plant’s privatisation to maintain ongoing corruption schemes, an allegation which prompted interior minister Arsen Avakov to lash out at Monday’s meeting.

Sergei Leshchenko, a lawmaker from the president’s faction, described what sounded more like a soap opera than a meeting of top officials: “A fight broke out, Avakov accused Saakashvili of being a thief, to which Saakashvili responded that he has nothing but an honest name. After that the minister began shouting ‘Get out of my country!’” before throwing a glass of water at Mr Saakashvili.

Mr Yatsenyuk, an ally of Avakov, intervened to echo Mr Avakov’s insults against former Georgian president Saakashvili, calling him an “actor on tour” and repeating the interior minister’s demands that he “get out of the country,” according to Mr Leshchenko.

Mr Saakashvili has long criticised both Mr Yatsenyuk and Mr Avakov for allegedly allowing corruption in the country to flourish – and profiting off of it. Yatsenyuk, for his part, has refuted all such allegations and described them as a smear campaign against him.

As corruption allegations have become a daily occurrence in Ukraine, even Ukraine’s biggest supporters in the US government have now expressed disappointment with the pace of reforms. US vice president Joe Biden last week warned the country’s leaders to get their act together or face losing international support.

Even as Mr Biden was visiting Kiev, however, the country’s poor track record with corruption made international headlines, as two dozen Dutch Golden Age paintings stolen from the Netherlands a decade ago turned up in Ukraine – and top Ukrainian officials were accused of holding them hostage.

The Westfries Museum, from where the paintings were stolen, claimed on December 7 that an ultra-nationalist group working with top officials in Ukraine was demanding €50 million ransom for the artworks.

Ukraine’s interior ministry has since promised to help locate the paintings, though no information on the Ukrainian investigation has yet been released.

Загалом, впродовж минулої доби проросійські НЗФ 40 разів порушували режим "повної тиші" у зоні проведення АТО із застосуванням 82-мм та 120-мм мінометів.

Про це йдеться у повідомленні прес-центру штабу АТО.

Так, в районі Мар’їнки тричі по позиціях ЗСУ загарбники вели вогонь з 82-мм та 120-мм мінометів. Окрім того, неодноразово застосовували стрілецьку зброю та гранатомети.

На Маріупольському напрямку бандити обстріляли з мінометів калібру 120 та 82 мм н.п. Водяне, що розташований у так званій "сірій зоні".
Біля тимчасово окупованої Горлівки бойовики відкривали вогонь зі стрілецької зброї та великокаліберних кулеметів в бік позицій сил АТО неподалік Майорська, з зенітної установки – в районі Новгородського.
Не припиняються обстріли і поблизу Донецького летовища. Окупанти систематично обстрілюють українських захисників біля Опитного, Пісків та південніше Авдіївки. Цієї ночі вони використовували там лише стрілецьку зброю та гранатомети.

Організовані злочинні угрупування знову порушили умови припинення вогню на Луганщині.

Так, під ворожий вогонь зі стрілецької зброї, гранатометів та великокаліберних кулеметів потрапило селище Трьохізбенка.

"Щоб запобігти втратам серед особового складу та місцевого населення, наші вояки змушені були відкрити прицільний вогонь у відповідь з дозволеного озброєння, після чого бойовики припинили обстріл", - сказано у повідомленні прес-центру.

У суботу бойовики стріляли 28 разів

Протягом 16 січня російсько-терористичні війська 28 разів обстрілювали позиції сил АТО. 

Про це повідомили у прес-центрі АТО станом на 18:00.

За даними штабу, здебільшого бойовики проявляли активність на Донецькому напрямку.

"З гранатометів та стрілецької зброї вони обстрілювали позиції сили АТО неподалік Зайцевого, Авдіївки, Пісків та Красногорівки. Найгарячіше було в районі Опитного. В бік українських воїнів бойовики вели вогонь із стрілецької зброї, великокаліберних кулеметів, різних типів гранатометів та БМП", - повідомили у прес-центрі.

Біля с.Луганське по позиціях сил АТО вели вогонь з великокаліберного кулемету та БМП.
Відносно спокійно було на Луганському та Маріупольському напрямках.

"В районі Мар’янки снайпер незаконних збройних формувань поцілив в автомобіль місії ОБСЄ, що перебував у складі патруля, до якого також входили офіцери української сторони Спільного центру контролю та координації припинення вогню та стабілізації обстановки на південному сході України, сапери ДержНС та військовослужбовці цивільно-військового співробітництва", - йдеться у повідомленні.
Представники місії ОБСЄ не постраждали.

The Ukrainian government has banned Russian food imports, in the latest round of a tit-for-tat trade war sparked by Kiev’s adoption of a trade deal with the European Union.

The ban on imports including beef, tobacco, chocolate, and alcohol products comes after Russia closed its own borders to a range of Ukrainian foods.

The embargo, which comes into force on January 10, will stay in place until August 5 or “until the cancellation of the ban on imports of agricultural products, food, and raw materials produced in Ukraine into the customs territory of the Russian Federation,” according to a decree signed by Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the Ukrainian prime minister.

Russia closed its borders to a range of Ukrainian meat, fish, dairy and vegetable products on Friday as part of pre-announced response toUkraine's decision to implement a free trade pact with Brussels.

The pact, part of a wide-ranging association agreement with the European Union, will see Ukraine and Europe lift import tariffs to create a single free-trade zone.

Russia strongly opposed the free trade pact and says its ban on Ukrainian imports is necessary to protect its own internal markets.

Russian officials have also described the embargo as retaliation for Ukraine joining European economic sanctions designed to punish Russia forannexing Crimea and supporting the separatist war effort in eastern Ukraine.

Russia has imposed identical retaliatory embargoes on Western food products, closing its markets to cheese, meat, fish, and almost all fruit and vegetables from North America, the EU, Norway, and Australia.

Ukraine was originally due to sign an association agreement with the European Union in November 2013, but Viktor Yanukovych, the then president of Ukraine, backed out under pressure from Russia.

The U-turn sparked massive street protests in Kiev that eventually snowballed into a revolution which ousted Mr Yanukovych in February 2014. The country's parliament finally approved the association agreement in September the same year.

The Russian government denounced the revolution as a western-sponsored coup, and responded by annexing Crimea and fuelling an armed separatist uprising in eastern Ukraine.

Штаб: Бойовики зосередили обстріли в районі Донецького аеропорту

Бойовики на Донбасі продовжують вести збройні провокації, які активізуються з настанням сутінків.

Про це прес-служба штабу АТО повідомляє на сторінці в Facebook.

"Найбільша кількість обстрілів зафіксована минулої доби в районі Донецького летовища. Там, неподалік Пісків та Опитного, загарбники неодноразово обстрілювали наші опорні пункти з гранатометів та стрілецької зброї", - йдеться в повідомленні.

Також збройні провокації відбувалися і на інших ділянках фронту.
На Маріупольському напрямку українські позиції були обстріляні із стрілецької зброї в районі Старогнатівки.

Всього протягом минулої доби бойовики 36 раз порушували режим "повної тиші" в зоні проведення АТО. Кілька обстрілів українських позицій з боку терористів зафіксовано і після півночі.
